We’ve built a reputation within the National Trust for getting the hard jobs no one else wants done efficiently and cost effectively, this was another such job.

The river Noe runs from kinder through edale and is a tributary of the river Derwent, normally just a sedate stream in spate it’s a fearsome fast moving river. The river had started eroding the banking past a previous bank reinforcement scheme from 20+ years ago and had pulled some of the old Gabions away with the flow.

Using our in house fleet of machines and accessories we created a coffer dam of local won clay and large steel road plates. Deploying our 3” diaphragm pump to help maintain low water levels we placed large boulders to form the toe of the bank stabilisation then Reno mattresses then Gabions all tided together and secured.

We created a temporary compound to maintain access for the farm and piped up a few drains which were adding to the erosion then Landscaped the area and planted new trees with sheep protection fencing.

The site had many challenges, access was limited by a narrow bridge and single access track. We had to re handle all the materials from the main rd to our work area (350m away) we utilised a skip to hold the Gabion stone at the work site allowing the excavator to place it in the Gabion cages. The site is also a SSSI site, with many stakeholders.

1 week after removing the coffer dam we had a massive rain fall which brought the river up 3m and flooded the lower working areas but we were tidying up and improving the farm access track by this point and the new Gabions did their job brilliantly.
